How We Review Slots and Slot Sites
By Liam Naidoo · Slots & Casino Reviewer · Updated June 2026
We review slots and slot sites by testing them on real accounts and scoring them on five things: RTP, volatility and max win; licensing and safety; bonuses, wagering and payments; mobile experience and game range; and overall value. Nothing is rated from a press release — every game and operator is checked hands-on.
This page explains our methodology, so you know exactly what our ratings mean. Our reviews are written by Liam Naidoo, who has tested 1,500+ slots and 200+ sites, and we update them as games and offers change.
RTP, Volatility & Max Win
The first thing we check on any slot is its maths: RTP, volatility and maximum win. We read the RTP from the game’s own info panel — because operators can run reduced versions — note the volatility, and record the top win.
RTP (return to player) tells you the long-term payout percentage; volatility describes how a game pays, from frequent small wins to rare big ones; and hit frequency shows how often any win lands. We flag when an operator runs a lower-RTP build of a game. For our full payout rankings, see our guide to the best RTP slots South Africa players can find.
Licensing & Safety Checks
Before we recommend any site, we verify its licence. We check whether an operator holds a South African provincial gambling board licence — such as the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (WCGRB) — and we clearly flag offshore sites (for example, Curaçao-licensed casinos) that aren’t locally regulated.
We also look at fairness and security: SSL encryption, RNG-based games, transparent terms, and how the operator handles complaints and withdrawals. A licensed, transparent site scores far higher with us than an unlicensed one, no matter how big its bonus. For the legal background, see our guide on whether online slots are legal in South Africa.
Bonuses, Wagering & Payments
We read every bonus’s terms, not just the headline number. We check the wagering requirement, maximum bet rules, eligible games and cash-out caps, then we test deposits and withdrawals ourselves.
Whether it’s free slots with bonus and free spins or a first-deposit match, we focus on fair wagering and how quickly you actually get paid. We confirm that local payment methods — Ozow, OTT Voucher and EFT — work for both deposits and withdrawals, and we note payout speed. See current deals in our best slots bonuses guide.
Mobile Experience & Game Range
We test every site on mobile, since most South African players play on their phones. We check the app and mobile site, how fast games load, and the size and quality of the game library.
A strong site offers slots from leading studios — Pragmatic Play, Habanero, NetEnt and others — across classic, video and jackpot slots, plus live casino. For more on the studios behind these games, see our slot providers guide.
Our Scoring System
We score each operator out of 5, weighting licensing and safety most heavily, followed by game range, bonuses, payments and mobile experience. A licensed, fair site with fast payouts scores highest.
Offshore sites are capped lower regardless of how generous their bonuses look, because there’s no local protection for players. We re-review sites periodically and update ratings when something material changes.
